3. Farmers + Homeless people

Students: Mashal Labeba + Simon Sandra

selected target groups strategy:

Excrescent utopia is a parasitic dwelling between two vital social groups that are: farmers and homeless people. When farmers start moving in to the city they are going to need help, and here comes the role of the homeless.  The latter gets a safe place to live and to eat, whereas the farmer gains labor force to start his small business. The whole project consists of an urban farm, greenhouse, seed bank, and workshop that are placed on the roof of an old building that is visible to martyr’s square; and of the living space of both groups in the old traditional abandoned house that is connected to a bridge and elevator.

Moreover, small boxes are spread out over the whole project, under the bridge around the elevator and stairs, and finally merge into the vertical farm. Their sizes vary from small to medium and then to small again. Although initially they started as small homeless units where each box represents their actions such as sleeping, resting, or eating… they were then transformed into lighting fixtures that light up the alley at night, and to small flower pots and seed banks.

The simple skin actually created the main gesture of the project. Not only does it aesthetically look homogenous, but it also plays an important part structurally. Thin, flying steps are wrapping the skin of the vertical elevator at one instance, and hiding behind the skin of the vertical roof at another.
